Overview
James Rossi is the President and Managing Attorney of Rossi Law Group APC. He is also a managing shareholder and co-founder of California Self Insurance Law APC. His practice is dedicated to zealously, ethically, and effectively defending insurance carriers, self-insured groups, self-insured employers, and third-party administrators in workers' compensation matters.
James has handled numerous high exposure and complex claims. He has also defended claims for serious and willful misconduct penalties, as well as L.C. §132a discrimination penalties.
James was admitted to practice before all California State Courts in 2001. He is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court, Central District of California, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.
Prior to founding Rossi Law Group on January 1, 2012, James spent his entire career with Crandall, Wade and Lowe. After initially practicing civil litigation (i.e., catastrophic personal injury defense and intellectual property litigation) as well as appellate law, he ventured into workers' compensation litigation and would ultimately establish an autonomous workers' compensation department within the firm. Rossi Law Group is both an extension and expansion of that department.
James has handled various appeals in the State and Federal Courts, including a landmark case pertaining to the Federal Court's subject matter jurisdiction. The issue was a matter of first impression in the 9th Circuit. Ultimately, James' appeal was granted on all issues in favor of his client, and the 9th Circuit issued a published opinion creating new controlling legal precedent. See Lively v. Wild Oats Markets, 456 F.3d 933 (9th Cir. 2006). Subsequently, the plaintiff petitioned the United States Supreme Court for a writ of certiorari. James opposed the petition, which was denied in its entirety, leaving the new law undisturbed. To date, the case has been cited more than 1000 times, including 300 legal decisions as well as numerous practice guides, treatises, and law review articles.
James is highly active in the workers’ compensation community. He is a frequent speaker at industry conferences, webinars, and other professional forums, regularly presenting to third-party administrators, insurance carriers, and self-insured employers on workers’ compensation legal issues and emerging trends. He has also authored several published articles addressing workers’ compensation law.
James is named among the top 1% of America's Most Honored Attorneys.
James holds an AV Preeminent® peer review rating from Martindale-Hubbell, the highest rating available, reflecting the highest levels of professional excellence and ethical standards.
James has been honored as a 2026 Southern California Super Lawyer, recognizing him as among the top 5% of attorneys. This marks the fifth time he has received this distinction.
James holds a “Superb” rating on Avvo, with a perfect 10.0 rating.
From 2005 through 2007, James was named a “Southern California Rising Star” by Law & Politics. He was recognized in Los Angeles Magazine and Southern California Super Lawyers Magazine as being among the top 2.5% of up-and-coming attorneys.
James graduated from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles, where he was an award-winning member of the Moot Court Honors Board. He also authored a law review article that was published as the lead article in Volume 42, Issue 2 of the Santa Clara Law Review.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
