Hired Attorney 2020-2022If I could give zero I would. She was appointed as minors counsel by the court and does not respond to emails and has completely destroyed my youngest (the other 2 refuse to talk to her 17/18 years old). She is clueless when there is an abusive parent and only wants to impress the judge, even if it means putting the kids in dangerous situations.

Consulted Attorney 2022I am a professional visitation monitor and have worked with Amy Van Sickle - she is minor's counsel. I have found Ms. Van Sickle to be the opposite of how she is represented by the 3 prior reviews, which seem to be that of the same person. She is fair and balanced and clearly puts the children's best interests first. As an attorney, her care and concern for the welfare of minor's demonstrates that she has their best interests at heart. Accordingly, she is perfectly suited for the work that she is tasked with.

Hired Attorney 2021-2022Has time to remove all negative AVVO ratings but not to respond to family concerns about the well being of the children she is paid to represent.
-
Hired Attorney 2020-2022She does not respond to emails or calls. She cares more about how the judge views her rather than what is best for her client.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
