Consulted Attorney 2024I attempted to hire this law office to represent me in collecting a debt from tenants for damages & back rent, post-eviction. They had me jump through the requisite hoops to provide a file, and then couldn't be bothered to respond with their promised fee agreement, nor even an acknowledgment that they had received the file or my repeat requests for a response. After 4 weeks, I gave up and emailed them that I was making other arrangements. Only then did Associate Matthew T. Berumen respond, with a belligerent tirade that we had six years to collect, and my expectations of any response from them regarding contracting for their services was unreasonable. "Wow", indeed. Very unprofessional. Very unresponsive. Very-much a firm to avoid.

Hired Attorney 2023Dealing with an extraordinary case of someone squatting, he is living in my home with myself and four others, he is not only squatting, he is harassing, terrorizing, and traumatizing the lives of five people. Someone else already refused to pay and left claiming they were constantly scared. It's been months, costing me thousands of dollars, and the money means nothing. This has been traumatic and It's happening to five people. This is cruel and unusual. He has done nothing extraordinary to help, just going through the steps, has taken over three months to get this processed, still planning on processing him for not paying, there will be no recourse for all the trauma, and now he just called me saying he needs to extend the trail again for personal reasons. Disgusting incompetence. I cannot believe this is even possible.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
