Hired Attorney 2001-2002My soon-to-be ex and I agreed to an amicable divorce, used mediation then hired John Otto and agreed to share the legal expenses. Unbeknownst to me, Otto and my ex teamed up against me. Although I was given what appeared to be a complete set of all the legal documents, portions of the mediated separation agreement had apparently not been filed by Otto resulting in my ex being able to renege on mediation provisions that he had previously agreed to especially regarding shared expenses for our children. Later when I filed a complaint, Otto represented my ex and arranged for the case to be heard by a horrendously biased, unfair female judge (recently removed from the bench after an investigation) whose brutal tone and demeanor traumatized me during the proceeding.

Consulted Attorney 2012John Otto is not fair in the gender sense. This lawyer/mediator supports male clients over female ones. He also tells his clients he cannot discuss issues without both parties being present, but then 2 minutes later tells me he had to make a return phone call to my soon-to-be ex and I wasn't going to be included in the subjects of the discussion. I do NOT recommend this professional to represent a female clientele. He is also is rude if you decide to not to pursue his services further and will take the case to court.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
