    Hired Attorney 2021-2022
In one of my first meetings with Richard Lane I complained about a Deputy and mentioned a lawsuit, Richard informed me that police can do whatever they want. Certainly not, I countered, if a police officer wanted to r*pe m I wouldn't have to comply. Yes, Richard Lane licensed attorney informed me, my only legal option when facing sexual assault from a LEO would be full compliance. That was actual bought and paid for legal advice. Aside from feeling betrayed at every turn, lied to constantly, and simply ignored to the point of possible legal liability. Richard would constantly bring any complaint I had to opposing counsel while never getting any information, this allowed the opposition to steel man their case fixing any issues I had while we were still left in the dark. He never discussed the witness list the opposition had filed, while never getting witnesses for me. I have never been so relieved to have a hearing postponed as I was the day I realized Richard hadn't prepared for our hearing at all, as mentioned previously the opposing counsel certainly had their witnesses were lined up. Now the undeniable utter ineptitude of Richard Lane. When I was hiring him I was NEVER given a Fee Agreement, this is a problem as I understand it for him and his firm. I informed him roughly three months prior to looking for new counsel that I hadn't signed a Fee Agreement, and Richard Lane decided I was wrong and "certainly" had signed a Fee Agreement. Turns out I hadn't signed one, something Richard Lane finally cared about when closing my file. ALSO, only upon finding new counsel did I find Richard Lane hadn't filed the Sworn Financials I had given his firm 3 months prior. Richard Lane is so inept he's a legal liability, he's a liar and simply doesn't care about you or your case. DO NOT HIRE THIS CLOWN. I regret it immeasurably and feel I would have been better off Pro Se for the time period he had failed to adequately represent me, and hands down, without a doubt he failed due diligence for both his firm with my initial paperwork and myself with filing he failed to give to the court.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
