    Hired Attorney 2020
I had the unfortunate experience of working with Attorney Larry Mertes, and it was profoundly disappointing. My expectations were far from met, as the overall experience was characterized by incompetence and a severe lack of professionalism. Mr. Mertes's preparation for court appearances was notably inadequate. It became clear that he had not thoroughly reviewed the details of my case, frequently making inaccurate statements and demonstrating a concerning lack of understanding of the legal issues involved. This eroded my confidence in his abilities and resulted in several avoidable setbacks. Additionally, Mr. Mertes's client service was subpar. His attitude was often dismissive and condescending. Whenever I tried to address my concerns or seek clarification, he was curt and unhelpful. This lack of empathy only compounded the stress of an already challenging situation. I must admit that I am apprehensive about posting this review due to concerns about potential retaliation. Nonetheless, I feel it is important to share my experience to prevent others from facing similar issues. In summary, my experience with Attorney Larry Mertes was deeply unsatisfactory. His incompetence, poor communication, and disregard for his duties led to an outcome far from what I had hoped for. I strongly advise anyone considering his services to proceed with extreme caution or, preferably, seek representation elsewhere. The legal process is challenging enough without having to deal with a lawyer who appears uninterested in fulfilling their responsibilities properly.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
