Michael Georgetti is probably one of the best Criminal Defense attorneys in the state. Because of that, he is on the expensive side but for me, he was worth every penny. Just be sure to get in writing, before accepting any plea deal, exactly what rights or privlidges you may be forfeiting by pleading guilty and the duration and scope of that forfeiture. I had been charged with growing and distributing pot (a felony) which I knew would have made me ineligible to own or buy so much as .22 cal rifle or shotgun for my home. Mike managed to get the charges reduced to misdemeanors (misdemeanor possession of less than 4 ounces of pot). I thought that this charge was not the best one for me since the amount of pot seized was actually closer to zero but they did have a dried out root system attached to about 6 inches of dried out stalk found in my trash can. i suppose with the dirt which clung to the roots you might be able to weigh out up to 4 ounces but it surely wasn't all pot. Anyway, the charge was a misdemeanor so I thought that I was in the clear as far as losing any rights was concerned. i didn't find out until 7 yeas later when I went to purchase an Italian made shotgun at a gun show that my name was registered in that federal list of people who can't legally buy guns. I thought it was a mistake until I found out that there are 2 or 3 misdemeanors that are treated like felonies in that they disqualify you from buying any gun forever. My felony pot charge was reduced to one of those three without attorney nor judge pointing out my loss of a constitutional right should I accept. They were very clear about the time needed to be spent in jail and then on probation but the loss of rights was never mentioned. Truth be told, I would have had to accept this offer if the prosecutor wouldn't budge any further on the pot charge but I might have thrown more money at it and dragged it out a while longer and who knows what could have happened? Maybe a new prosecutor would see things differently. Regardless, You must inform your client what is coming at him out of left field so that he makes his decision to plead guilty or not guilty with all the facts concerning the results of either action (most certainly the results as applied to any rights granted him in the Bill of Rights).

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
