    Hired Law firm 2021
I sent a $10,000 check for a deposit on a home. The home failed inspection terribly. The office has yet to respond to my calls and emails on the deposit refund. They are now ignoring us. I walked into the office today and the lady Alex had a bad attitude. She didn’t have any excuse as to why no one responded. She rushed me off. I still don’t have my money back.

Please be aware that in accordance with the rules governing professional and ethical attorney conduct, our office is prohibited from dealing directly with a person when we are aware that such person is represented by another attorney. Since you were represented by another attorney and you were/are not a client of our firm, the ethical rules dictate that our office should not be communicating directly with you. For this reason, it was inappropriate to return your calls or have any discussions at our office without your counsel present and therefore I was unable to engage directly with you in order to be in compliance with the rules. I am sorry you feel I had a bad attitude but I was just trying to make you understand the rules dictating our conduct. You were trying to get a deposit back which was not available at the time you reached out to us but you did receive it very shortly thereafter.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
