Babak Akhlaghi is the Founding Director of NovoTech Patent Firm, a Washington, D.C.-based patent law firm serving startups, entrepreneurs, and technology companies. His practice focuses on patent portfolio development, patent prosecution, intellectual property due diligence, freedom-to-operate analyses, and strategic counseling for cutting-edge technologies. Babak has advised clients on patent strategy and overseen patent portfolio development and prosecution efforts involving artificial intelligence, machine learning, software platforms, blockchain, quantum computing, semiconductor technologies, robotics, medical devices, and other emerging technologies.
Additionally, Babak has represented both Patent Owners and Third-Party Requesters in patent reexamination proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He has counseled clients in patent licensing negotiations, drafted patent licensing agreements, and advised clients on patent validity, enforceability, and infringement analyses.
Babak Akhlaghi has been recognized in the IAM Strategy 300, an annual distinction awarded to leading professionals who excel in maximizing the value of intellectual property portfolios through sophisticated portfolio management and business-driven IP strategies. He has also been recognized as a WIPR Leader and selected to Super Lawyers for eight consecutive years.
In addition to his legal practice, Babak serves as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland, where he teaches Legal Aspects of Entrepreneurship. He is also a co-author of the annual Patent Applications Handbook published by Westlaw. Prior to founding NovoTech Patent Firm, he gained in-house and private practice experience with organizations including Panasonic, Fish & Richardson, and McDermott Will & Emery.
Babak earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering, magna cum laude, from the University of Maryland, where he graduated first in his class. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the State of Maryland, and the District of Columbia.
