Overview

Babak Akhlaghi is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm’s Washington, D.C., office. Babak focuses his practice on patent prosecution, reexamination, freedom-to-operate investigation, opinion work, and licensing.

Babak has prepared and prosecuted patent applications in the field of electrical and mechanical arts including analog and digital circuits, computer software, internet-driven technologies, semiconductor structures, mechanical designs, automotives, power supplies, communications and signal processing, financial services, optics, and network system and security. Additionally, Babak has been involved in patent reexaminations for the Patent Owner and the Third Party Requester. Babak has also counseled clients in patent licensing negotiations and drafted patent licensing agreements. Additionally, Babak has counseled clients on patent validity, enforceability, and infringement studies.

Babak’s previous legal experience includes serving as an in-house counsel at Panasonic Corporation. Babak’s previous technical experience includes serving as a radio frequency technician.

Babak is a frequent contributor to McDermott’s IP Update and has written numerous articles on patent-related issues.

Babak’s pro bono experience includes routinely working at Landlord-Tenant Resource Center.

Babak earned his B.S.E.E., magna cum laude, from the University of Maryland, where he ranked first in the graduating class. While in law school, Babak served as an article editor for the Houston Business & Tax Law Journal.

Babak is a certified mediator and has mediated lawsuits in the local courts of Houston, Texas. He is admitted to practice in Maryland, District of Columbia, and before United States Patent and Trademark Office.
