Attorney Information

Overview

Jacob's practice focuses on patent litigation: he represents U.S. and foreign clients as both plaintiffs and defendants at every stage of a patent dispute, from pre-complaint investigation and freedom-to-operate opinions through arbitration or trial in federal district court or before the U.S. International Trade Commission and appeal at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He also represents clients in post-grant challenges before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

With a background in mechanical engineering and industry experience, Jacob speaks the technical languages of his clients. Passionate about learning the details of their technologies, operations, and inventions, he then merges that knowledge with his legal expertise and strategizes with his clients to secure the best possible results within the context of their ultimate business goals. Jacob is proficient in advising clients on multi-faceted disputes that span many tribunals. Jacob is equally adept at working side-by-side with domestic in-house counsel well-versed in the complexities of American patent litigation as he is providing guidance to foreign companies new to the U.S. marketplace and legal system.

Jacob was named in The Legal 500 2026 US Elite Washington, DC Edition. He was also named to Lawdragon’s 2026 and 2025 lists of 500 Leading Litigators in America. Jacob played a leading role in PV Law being awarded a Chambers and PARTNERS 2025 ranking for the firm’s outstanding work for our clients at the PTAB and greatly contributed to our firm being named by Patexia for consecutive years for outstanding work for clients before the PTAB. He has been honored individually by Patexia for his PTAB work and by Super Lawyers.

Prior to joining PV Law, Jacob practiced law at an AmLaw Top 10 global law firm, where, in addition to maintaining his litigation and post-grant review practice, he prosecuted patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Jacob drafted patent applications, advised clients on strategies to maximize patent protection, and argued appeals at the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences (now the Patent Trial and Appeal Board).

Jacob represents companies across a wide range of industries and technologies, including medical devices, office equipment, semiconductor manufacturing, mobile telecommunications, and power tools.

Prior to attending law school, Jacob worked as a design engineer for a manufacturer of subsea production systems.

Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
