Overview

As a founding partner of the IP boutique, PV Law LLP, Robert Gaybrick draws upon his 40+ years of experience patent litigation, dispute resolution, licensing, and patent analysis and development to help U.S. and Asian companies successfully implement IP-related goals, navigate IP disputes, and increase and obtain returns from the value of their IP portfolios. His ease across cultures enhances his understanding of the global challenges faced by owners of intellectual property and by manufacturers and suppliers of technically-sophisticated products and services. His relationships with legal, business, and science communities and thought leaders throughout the world, developed over decades of practice at the highest levels, enable him to undertake and resolve efficiently and effectively IP issues of all forms.

Robert counsels on IP issues involving electrical, computer, semiconductor, display, automotive, and mechanical technologies. An intellectual property strategist, he advises businesses on litigation, licensing, patent procurement, and portfolio development, and has participated in more than 200 patent licensing negotiations and transactions. Robert also offers IP opinions and litigates cases in courts throughout the United States.

With undergraduate degrees in computer science and electrical engineering, Robert has experience with many of the world's leading electronics companies in licensing negotiations, litigation, and transactions. He develops and executes many portfolio license initiatives, including completing one licensing agreement for computer-related IP in a deal valued at more than $150 million. Robert was recognized in 2017 by the National Law Journal as an Intellectual Property Trailblazer. He was also named by Patexia Insights as a Top 250 Best Performing Attorney for the PTAB in 2023.

In addition to litigating patent cases across the United States, Robert advises both complainants and respondents in Section 337 investigations before the US International Trade Commission.

Prior to launching PV Law LLP in 2020, Robert was a partner and the founder of the patent practice and co-practice group chair of Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP's Intellectual Property Practice Group. Previously, he was a partner at the leading IP boutique, Finnegan, Henderson, where he led the electrical and computer practice group and where he also worked as a foreign law consultant in a Tokyo law office to establish a presence for the firm in Japan.

Robert served as a technical adviser to the Honorable Judge Phillip B. Baldwin of the Court of Customs and Patent Appeals (the predecessor court to the Federal Circuit) before entering private practice.

He was a computer engineer prior to entering the legal field.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
