Overview

Erin N. Lockhart is an associate attorney in the Insurance Defense practice group at Smith Bigman Brock. Her practice is focused on defending insureds and insurance carriers in complex civil litigation throughout Florida. She brings more than twenty years of diverse litigation experience representing businesses, insurers, and individuals in complex civil matters, combining extensive courtroom advocacy with a practical understanding of risk management, employment issues, and dispute resolution.

Prior to joining Smith Bigman Brock, Erin served as Manager of Employee Relations for The Walt Disney Company, where she conducted highly sensitive workplace investigations, advised leadership on employment-related matters, partnered with legal and human resources professionals to address enterprise risk, and provided guidance on policy interpretation, performance management, and workplace training. This experience complements her litigation background by providing clients with practical, business-oriented legal insight.

Before transitioning to Disney, Erin represented businesses, insurers, and individuals in a broad range of litigation matters throughout Florida. Her practice has included insurance defense, general liability, premises liability, automobile negligence, negligent security, construction defect, commercial litigation, labor and employment matters, and appellate support. She also provided litigation research and drafting services to attorneys and law firms across multiple jurisdictions through her work with Delegate Legal.

Earlier in her career, Erin served as a Special Prosecutor with the Office of the State Attorney for Florida's Seventh Judicial Circuit, where she prosecuted complex felony cases involving career offenders and other specially assigned criminal matters.

Erin earned a Juris Doctor from Stetson University College of Law while simultaneously completing a Master of Business Administration at Stetson University. She also holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Stetson University. Her legal and business education provides a valuable perspective when advising clients facing complex litigation and business-related legal issues.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
