    Hired Law firm 2018-2019
We hired Michael Romm as part of a team to defend us in an equine litigation case with potentially millions at stake. All started well he promised us that we would be his sole focus and that our previous counsel had made many mistakes. He started to bill us with no breakdown of the invoice, i asked him several time for an itemized invoice but he said that he was “trying to learn the software”. This went on for a fe months and was getting work done during this time. However, our co-counsel quit saying they couldn’t get along with Mr Romm, so we had to find new co-counsel. Then Mr Romm asked for an “advance on his invoice for his ailing mother”. which we gave him ( I know, dumb). Then in July of 18 he just went dark for weeks, not responding to phone, text or email. When he eventually resurfaced he had some excuse about personal issues, but not once did he even send a 3 word text to let us know. Then the real issues started, inability to work with our new co-counsel, the opposition counsel or be effective in the court room. He continued to periodically go dark on us with no explaination. Then he started to just not do the work in the time frame sett by the court so constantly delaying the case and filing for extensions with out consulting us or our co-counsel. I could lement for ever about what i think are bogus charges etc but you get the picture. In my opinion stay well clear of this guy.

Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
