Hired Attorney 2018-2022I was a client of Diane’s until I witnessed her behavior at a marketing happy hour. The entire time she was throwing back drink after drink and saying inappropriate and personal things about her staff. It was appalling the things coming out of mouth. She then proceeded to get in her vehicle and drive while heavily intoxicated! This is not the person I want representing my Association. The Board found new counsel and terminated her firm’s services within the week. As a community manager I now ensure none of my clients are represented by Simons Law Group.

Hired Attorney 2022Ms. Simons is never in the office. Always “on vacation”. Never returns paying clients calls blames staff for missed calls. I believe her cell phone is what is listed as her contact number, so I’m unsure how not returning messages on a cell phone provided on pens and business cards is the fault of staff. When you do get Ms. Simons on the phone, she is hostile and acts annoyed by questions regarding Association concerns. It’s also concerning, that the turnover of employees in this firm is high. There have been 3 attorneys our Association can count that have left within less than 6 months and 2 paralegals. Ms. Simons also seems to blame any error on whoever departed the firm last, instead of looking into the matter. The attorney rates are also misleading and never explained when questioned.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
