Attorney Information
Overview
Attorney Karamat Qayum is dedicated to representing the immigrant community and people who have been injured by the negligence of others. He was born in Medellín, Colombia. Mr. Qayum came to the United States at the young age of 10, and he was undocumented in the United States for a period of time. He is fluent in English and Spanish. The lawyer is trained to understand the concerns and difficulties that people have in legal processes.
Attorney Qayum graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice from Florida International University. While earning his undergraduate degree, he served as an intern at the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, where he gained invaluable knowledge about the criminal justice process. He is also a proud alumnus of Florida International University School of Law.
While in law school, he participated in the Immigrant Children’s Justice Clinic, where he represented immigrant children subject to removal proceedings. He also participated in the Community Development Clinic, where he provided legal advice and transactional services to small businesses and nonprofit organizations. These experiences provided him with the necessary knowledge about the justice system in the United States to advise his clients in their legal processes.
Attorney Qayum served as a judicial intern for Judge Stacy D. Glick. Additionally, he was a judicial officer for the United States Department of Justice Executive Office of Immigration Review, where he advised and drafted legal decisions for immigration judges on matters related to individual removal cases. He later worked at a prestigious immigration law firm located in Coral Gables. He then opened the doors to his own law firm, Garcia & Qayum Law Group, P.A.
Attorney Qayum has been the president of the Colombian American Bar Association (COLBAR). He also served on the board of directors of the Miami-Dade Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board, where he advised Miami-Dade commissioners on issues of need in the Hispanic community. Attorney Qayum was also selected for inclusion in Florida Rising Stars in 2019 - 2024. Only 2.5% of lawyers in the state receive this annual distinction.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
