Overview

Mauricio Padilla is a criminal and civil trial attorney who has spent the last two decades battling for his clients in some of the nation's most notable cases. His practice mainly focuses on state and federal criminal defense. His civil practice involves catastrophic injury, wrongful death, negligent security/premises liability claims as well as medical malpractice cases. He represented Derick Medina in what the media referred to as "The Facebook Murder", he represented Sigfredo Garcia in the "Dan Markel murder" in Tallahassee Florida. He recently represented Dedrick Williams in the murder case of entertainer XXXTentacion.

Mr. Padilla started his career working for Dade County Legal Aid helping those that could not afford private counsel. After two years he was hired by a boutique Coral Gables Law firm that specializes in wrongful death and medical malpractice. At that firm, he handled a variety of catastrophic injury cases including aircraft disaster cases, and litigated a medical malpractice case that resulted in a jury verdict of more than 6 million dollars. Throughout his career, Mr. Padilla has represented injured clients who have been awarded more than 30 million dollars in jury verdicts, and or arbitration awards.

Early in his career, Mr. Padilla had the life-changing experience of being part of the first Emmaus Medical Mission that was founded by Dr. Landy Silva and traveled 11 times to Guatemala to help doctors and nurses bring medical relief to impoverished areas of Guatemala. Mr. Padilla is vice president of Blind Warriors Inc. a nonprofit he helped create along with blind jiujitsu black belt Carlos Alvarez. The mission of this nonprofit is to teach jujitsu to the visually impaired.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
