Hired Law firm 2013-2014Andrew Helgesen was recommended by the court as an Attorney Ad Litem. I was led to believe that he would represent my son's best interest to the court. He did just the opposite. He gave my son false hope that he would do what was right. My son was severely emotionally abused by his father, exposed to his father's affair, forced to visit with him when he would beg not to go, and was so distraught that my son told a friend he would rather not live then be forced to stay with his father. I was physically attacked with my son in the room. I was stalked and harassed by my ex and I lived in fear for my life for several years. Helgesen knew all this, but when my ex lost his temper in a mediation, Helgesen had the nerve to coach him by telling him it wouldn't look good if he acted this way in court. He ignored letters that were written by my son expressing his state of mind at the time. He criticized my adult daughter for having a child with her husband before they were married, but never addressed that my son's father had an affair, was living with his girlfriend, and had exposed our son to her before he had even moved out of the house. Helgesen came to my home after I tried to reschedule our home visit. We had just gotten home from the ER where my son was diagnosed with strep throat. He had been running a fever, had barely eaten for five days, and lost several pounds. I explained all this, but he insisted on visiting. I told my son to go lie down and I would get him if needed. Helgesen reprimanded me and said that I was babying him. His performance was awful. I tried to make him understand what we were being put through, but when you're in a position where you feel that someone has the power over you to take your rights away as a mother, you have to keep your mouth shut. It's now six years later and he can't touch my son as he is 19 years old. I want people to know what he did and how horrible it was to deal with this man. His final fee for meeting with us, speaking to my son a couple of times, speaking to people who chose to be witnesses and writing a report was $11,000. All for nothing. I feel his report was as unprofessional as he was and his recommendation was not even considered by the court.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
