Attorney Information

Overview

Aya Abunada, Esq. was born and raised in Largo, Florida and knew early on that she was born for a career in law. Eager to advance in her career, she obtained her Associates of Arts degree when she was just seventeen years old. Not stopping there, Aya obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of South Florida while preparing to attend law school at Stetson University College of Law. Before graduating with her Juris Doctor degree from Stetson, Aya became an Associate Editor for the Journal of Comparative International Aging Law and Policy and a member of the Pro Bono Committee for the Florida Association for Women Lawyers. During her time in law school, Aya interned with Gulfcoast Legal Services to help individuals in need at their darkest time. There, she heard the stories of families in crisis and was able to witness the importance of championing the rights of the vulnerable. Her love of family law grew, and she knew she had found her passion.

Since graduating law school, Aya has continued to be involved in the local legal community, which included sitting on the Board of Directors for the Young Lawyers Division of the Clearwater Bar Association. She is also an active member of the Canakaris Inn of Court. In her free time, Aya enjoys spending time with friends and family, frequenting theme parks, watching movies, and checking out new restaurants in the area.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
