Attorney Information
Overview
Gurley Law, P.A. is a firm solely dedicated to the practice of marital and family law. Located in Palm Harbor, the firm's practice encompasses adoption, divorce, collaborative law, paternity, support, modification, relocation, pre-nuptial/post-nuptial agreement. Marital and family law matters are uniquely personal and often emotional in a way that other areas of law are not. For that reason, Gurley Law, P.A. is a solution-focused practice that strives to help their clients through their difficult marital and family law matters to reach a fair resolution.
Heather Gurley, Esq. grew up in the Midwest and ultimately graduated from high school in North Dakota. Not wanting to live a life of shoveling snow, Heather decided to move to Florida and eventually found her way to the Clearwater/St. Petersburg area which has been her home for over 15 years. Having gained extensive experience as a paralegal, in various areas of law, Heather decided to return to school to obtain her law degree. Heather obtained her B.A. in History from the University of South Florida and then obtained her law degree from the Stetson University College of Law.
As a single mother attending law school and working full time as a paralegal, Heather often joked that her future biographies would lack the impressive achievements and participations in various organizations other attorneys would have because her priority was ensuring she and her son had a roof over their heads and something more than ramen to eat.
After law school, Heather was employed with a marital and family law firm where she not only gained extensive litigation experience, but she also discovered she truly enjoyed the practice of marital and family law. In 2017, Heather opened Gurley Law, P.A. and the firm continues to grow.
Heather is certified as a Family Law Mediator by the Supreme Court of Florida. Heather is a member of Clearwater Bar Association and currently chairs the Family Law Section. Heather is also a member of the Canakaris American Inn of Court where she serves as the Liaison to the American Inns of Court. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband and her two boys.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
