Hired Law firm 2001-2002I was referred to Joel Yanchuck by his best friend who died shortly afterwards. My case then became totally irrelevant to him and was passed from one legal aide to the next until it was so mishandled that the state required paperwork was filed with the insurance carriers name misspelled, further causing it to not be filed on time. Because of this attorney's total mishandling, I ended up having to file bankruptcy. I lost my home of 20 years, my business, all of my savings , everything. Most importantly, I lost all access to healthcare for my injuries, leaving me disabled permanently. I now live in affordable housing in a drug ridden neighborhood thanks to how my life was left in shambles by this attorney's incompetence. Had I not been going through the medical issues and trying to find a place to live with my elderly mother in hand, perhaps I could have taken some action against him at the time. But as it was and is , I have been struggling just to maintain my life . The fact that he was experiencing personal problems with a divorce, and moving his office, should not have affected my life the way it did. Seriously, I doubt he has ever given a thought to the harm he caused my life. And I doubt anyone will ever read or see this. But at least I got to speak my peace, finally.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
