Overview

Karen Valente graduated with honors from Mercer University School of Law, was on Law Review and was the Editor of the Eleventh Circuit Survey for the Mercer Law Review and graduated with honors from Mercer University as an undergraduate. Mrs. Valente has been admitted to practice in Florida for more than 30 years. She started in a general civil practice before focusing for many years on worker's compensation cases, first from a defense standpoint and then from a claimant's perspective. During her tenure as a Worker's Compensation claimant's lawyer, Karen tried or resolved four cases for over one million dollars and two for more than 3 million dollars. Settlements like these were taken away by the Florida legislature with changes to the workers compensations system and Karen refocused her practice to the handling of Personal Injury, Medical Malpractice, Defamation, and Commercial cases. A seasoned litigator, Karen has handled depositions of the highest level medical and expert witnesses and first chair trials of workers compensation and exposure cases. Karen is equally involved in the handling of all of the firm's largest medical malpractice, commercial, defamation and professional malpractice cases. Together with Philip Valente Jr. , they form the trial team for all of the firm's cases taken to trial.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
