Hired Law firm 2016-2019A few years ago, I was in a waiting room at the Atlanta VA Hospital comparing health issues with another old Vietnam type. He handed me a tattered business card for Attorney Benjamin Walters, with the Archibald and Silver law firm in Athens. He said “If you ever need help dealing with the VA, call this guy, he really helped me out.” It didn’t take long to realize I did need help. I called Mr. Walters and he agreed to represent me with a benefits appeal I’d filed with the V.A. In the time I was represented by Mr. Walters (and the staff at Silver and Archibald), their work was always the best and most professional legal representation I could have ever gotten anywhere at any price. My calls and emails with questions were always promptly responded to, with clear and detailed information. Mr. Walters got me to a resolution that exceeded anything I could have hoped for and at a time when it made the difference between just getting by and living with fewer concerns about my health issues and my ability to care for my family. I can echo the advice I got from the vet in the waiting room at the VA Hospital: “If you ever need help dealing with the VA, call this guy, he really helped me out.” H. Mitchell

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
