Hired Attorney 2020-2021We had a consult with this attorney + contracted his services. During the initial consult, he acted distracted, looked at a computer screen + slamming our previous legal advisor's character. He told us he'd negotiate a loan mod with the financial institution for a retainer fee, a fair portion of which said he thought would most likely be returned to us at the end of the process. Though he promised in writing to negotiate this modification, he never followed through. Instead, he got us on a forbearance, then abandoned the case. This has ultimately cost us more money with the bank, left the issue unresolved + actually in a worse situation than we were originally, as when you exit a forbearance, there's a 3-month rule to be able to refi, which was impossible since the bank is demanding one single balloon payment. When we went back, he was disinterested, busy with something else.. At last, he said we owed more than the retainer, but never had not communicated any changes in fees. Call HUD.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
