Hired Law firm 2023Tracey Moran became my lawyer in traffic court through Legal Shield (my prepaid lawyer provider). She was "supposed" to represent me in court regarding a speeding ticket. It became clear she works for the court rather than her client, when she told me the night before court that I had to be present in court with her. That's strange, because typically your lawyer can represent you in court without you. Anyway, I did not speak to my lawyer prior to the court hearing (which is also typical), so upon my first meeting with Tracey, she already had paperwork for me to plead NoLo on this case, and told me my officer was present. Meaning I was to plead guilty and get 2 points on my license instead of 4 to 6 points. I explained that I did not want the ticket on my record at all because my insurance is high enough, and that I wanted to go to trial. She then asked me "what are you going to use to plead your case," basically implying she wasn't going to represent me in court, and that she had nothing to defend me. She was rude and short with me whenever she spoke, and asked me several times "do you want to plead NoLo or not?" She was very pushy and condescending (she might as well have been the prosecutor). I did not appreciate her demeanor at all. Mind you, I'm looking at all the officers present, and mine was not present. I guess she noticed I was looking around for the officer, because she asked me to go into the hall. She asked if I saw my officer present. I said "no, my officer is a black man" (as all the officers present where white). She says, "I thought I'd ask." But Tracey, I thought my officer was present 😒. So she tells the prosecuting attorney that my officer isn't present. The attorney states. "We'll wait. He's probably on the road." So they pretty much waited until the officer arrived (close to 10 am when court began at 8:30 am). Once Tracey spotted a black officer enter the court room she asks "is that him." I say yes. She immediately says in a short tone, "do you want to do the NoLo or not?" I was so put off and angry, I didn't know what to do. I wanted to blow up on her on the spot, but was trying to hold my composure. She was so arrogant and rude, I couldn't stand it. I finally agreed to the NoLo because I felt I had no other option. I didn't have a enough time to prepare my own defense for the ticket, which was why I hired an attorney in the first place, but that was a complete waste of money. Everything she did, I could've done on my own without her services, and I would've been less stressed because her nasty attitude wouldn't have spoiled my day. I do not recommend her services at all, nor Legal shield the prepaid lawyer service that works with her. Worst lawyer services I've ever had. Imagine paying for a public defender because that's the type of service I received today.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
