Hired Law firm 2025I will start by saying this whole case has been exhausting for my sister (the client) & I. I was the financial stakeholder for my sisters contested divorce case. It was complicated due to being tied to another legal issue. We came from a previous family law firm that milked us for every penny (over $14,500 in just 6 months without mediation or court). When my sister found Attorney M. Sanford we were already mentally exhausted and simply on edge. Since our previous attorneys did not provide the work they charged us for, it was like starting all over again. However, despite Attorney Sanford’s hourly rate being the same as the previous attorney, her charges actually made sense, the work performed showed results. Within 3 months she got my sister’s case to mediation and ended the divorce. I personally believe it was a good outcome for my sister. Sanford even used left over funds in the retainer to help cover mediation fees. She is compassionate but realistic & firm. Someone my sister really needed. My gratitude to Attorney Sanford can't be conveyed in words alone. Thank you so much & I highly recommend her.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
