Firm Information
Overview
Healan Law Offices, P.C. has been in business in the Winder (Barrow County) area of Georgia since 1975.
Healan Law Offices, P.C. began in 1975 when William D. Healan, Jr. (Bill) graduated from the University of Georgia school of law. Mr. Healan returned to his hometown of Winder to open his practice. In the early days, Mr. Healan had a general practice, handling cases ranging from real estate to bankruptcy to murder. Mr. Healan quickly gained a reputation for hard work and dedication to his practice.
Although Bill Healan had various partners and associates over the years, the firm took its current form when his son, William D. Healan, III (Billy) graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1996. Billy Healan had been interested in criminal defense since law school, after having interned at the UGA legal aid clinic.
As a third year law student, Billy Healan had the opportunity to try various criminal cases, including jury trials. This experience enabled Mr. Healan to be completely ready for the courtroom when he was admitted to the bar in 1996.
Since that time, Billy Healan has devoted his practice almost exclusively to criminal defense. He handles everything from speeding tickets to murder cases. A large portion of his practice is devoted to DUI defense. Mr. Healan has numerous reported appellate cases to his credit. He has gained the respect of the legal community, being voted as a rising star in Super Lawyers Magazine four times from 2005-2010.
Healan Law Offices, P.C. also handles select personal injury cases. The firm will typically only accept a personal injury case if it involves a serious injury. We do not handle personal injury cases involving only minor injuries or property damage.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
