Attorney Information
Overview
P. Gregory Frey, JD4386, known to all simply as "Greg," is a third generation attorney, following in the footsteps of his paternal grandfather (USC Law) and father (Stanford Law). He quite literally grew-up, together with his twin brother, under his Father's desk -- the very desk he proudly sits at today, decades later. Greg defines himself as a "old school attorney," and he's proud of that reality. His father ----- a rather famed "3-dot" attorney member of the Hawaii State Bar way "back-in-the-day" ----- instilled in him day-after-day that good attorneys, great attorneys do more than simply represent their clients, they "go to the mat" for each of them, and along the way, volunteer often to help those in need and also try to do good things in the community, for the community. Greg took the advice to heart, and as a result, his personal life clearly demonstrates that he's got an amazing philanthropic spirit & energy & devotion which rivals most. In a few words, Greg has "given back" for decades, for his entire career. Here's but a few of the things he's done which are important to him, and for which he has ALWAYS carried a sincere passion & special devotion:
** Service on the Hawaii State Bar Association Board for about 10 years, culminating as Bar President in 2020 (arguably the most prestigious philanthropic honor a lawyer can achieve in his/her career).
** Service on literally dozens (if not hundreds) of Committees in Family Court of the First Circuit (Oahu) spanning over 30 years, to include appointment by the Chief Justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court to Special Master positions in divorce & paternity cases, and extensive volunteer work with the Access to Justice program in Family Court, Volunteer Legal Services of Hawaii ("VLSH") and Mediation Center of the Pacific ("MCP").
** Service on numerous local school boards, to include Saint Louis School Trustees for about 12 years and Sacred Hearts Academy for some 6 years.
** Service on numerous Alumni Association boards, to include St. Louis Alumni Assoc. for 17 years (to include 10 consecutive years as President) and Santa Clara University Alumni for about 3 years (travelling from HI to CA for each meeting in the days before Zoom).
** Service on the Waikiki Yacht Club ("WYC") Board of Directors for about 9 years, culminating as Commodore in 1997 ("fun fact" - Greg was the first son of a former commodore to also be elected commodore in the famed Club's almost 80 year existence).
** Service on the ABRACADABRA 2000 National Board for years, the syndicate responsible for getting the first boat out of HAWAII to enter the famed AMERICA's CUP.
** Member & Partner & Managing Attorney of Coates Frey & Hackett, AAL LLLC for 22 years (from 1996-2018) & now, Member & Partner & Senior Attorney of Coates Frey & Hackett, AAL LLLC).
** Founder & Bd. President of SeMPer FREY, Inc., dba The Wishes GRANTed Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt Public Charity established to honor his (twin) brother, LtCol. Grant V. Frey, USMC (Ret.) who was tragically lost to COVID-19 in 2020.
** Co-owner of The P.I.A.E Group, LLC dba The Pacific Ink & Art Expo aka Hawaii Tattoo Expo.
All this volunteer service & hard work to try to help & to guide others has led Greg to enjoy & to earn & to achieve lots of accolades, honors & recognition, to include these:
** Two-time recipient of VLSH's Kahiau Award.
** Inducted to SLS's Gallery of Distinguished Achievers ("GODA'), 2018.
** Lifetime appointment as SLS' Trustee Emeritus.
** Inductee to Santa Clara Rugby Hall of Fame, 2018.
** WYC Member of the Year, 1997.
If asked, Greg will tell you & anyone who will listen that each of these "life experiences" & related honors / recognition has allowed him to create and maintain a very special understanding of the unique needs of local folks, and how to best meet these needs. Greg's a true "people person" who is devoted to "talk story" with his clients until solutions are found, and until work gets done to the total satisfaction (hopefully!?!) of each person Greg works for and works with. His "jump right in" approach to his work as a Family Law attorney comes from all the unique & hands-on stuff he has done for decades. As said, Greg sees himself as a "local boy who helps local folks." Please allow Greg to help YOU when & if needed.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
