Attorney Information

Overview

Nicole L. Cannon has been practicing law since 1998. For over 11 years, she was a deputy prosecuting attorney, then prosecuting attorney, in Minidoka County, Idaho. During this time, her primary area of emphasis was criminal prosecution, during which she gained extensive courtroom and trial experience. She specialized in the prosecution of child sexual offenses, drug offenses and DUIs. She trained law enforcement officers regarding legal matters. Ms. Cannon was also heavily involved in civil work for the county, including planning and zoning, personnel issues, administration, and advising the county commissioners and other elected officials on legal matters.

After leaving public office, Ms. Cannon joined the law firm of Powers Tolman in January 2009. She currently handles cases involving medical malpractice, product liability, commercial liability and general liability (casualty and personal injury).

Nikki is a resident of our Twin Falls office and represents clients throughout the State. She knows litigation both as an advocate and a judge. Her prior judicial experience is invaluable in advising clients on the best approach to success in court. Nikki represents physicians in medical malpractice actions and is particularly well known for her defense of emergency room physicians in trial. She has been successful in defending these cases to jury verdict. Like all of the firm’s lawyers, Nikki understands medicine and the human body. In any given week, Nikki may be arguing a motion in Idaho Falls, representing a physician in Boise in front of the Board of Medicine or meeting with an insured client in her office in Twin Falls.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
