Attorney Information

Overview

Jeffrey E. Martin "Jeff" is a trusted Chicago lawyer who has dedicated his career to representing those who have suffered injury or loss due to the negligence of others.

He becomes his clients' legal voice during some of the most difficult times in their lives.

Jeff has won numerous complex cases in excess of $1,000,000. This is no coincidence. He achieves this by having a thorough knowledge of the subject matter and by crafting a clear and consistent line of reasoning that juries can understand and that insurance adjusters take seriously.

Jeff recovered $6,000,000 in a medical malpractice case against a gynecologist and her practice for failing to warn a woman about the slight chance her non-malignant left adnexal mass could develop into ovarian cancer so she could elect to have the mass removed.

In a recent case, Jeff won a verdict of $5,500,000 in a medical malpractice case of a husband and father whose death was caused by a pulmonary embolism that occurred before the scheduled surgery even started. From the moment he met the family, Jeff made it his business to learn the "medicine" behind this tragedy and investigate where the standard of care had been breached.

Jeff won a $5,000,000 verdict against a hospital and one of its residents for improper intubation of a 14-year-old shooting victim.

He was able to recover $4,600,000 against a premier Chicago hospital for its staff's failure to place a five-year-old on a respirator, having retained as an expert a world-renowned specialist regarding patients in vegetative states.

In a very emotional case, Jeff recovered $4,500,000 for a young woman whose adrenal cancer was not diagnosed and treated because the doctor failed to perform standard of care exams and testing and, instead, attributed all of her symptoms to polycystic ovary syndrome. The result was a delay in diagnosis and treatment that led to her untimely death.

Recently, Jeff recovered $2,000,000, the entire liability insurance policies of an elementary school Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and an inflatable amusement retailer for wrist and ankle fractures suffered by a fifth grader when an 18-foot inflatable slide fell over inside a gymnasium. As a result of subsequent ankle surgery, the child developed Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Jeff understands CRPS, a chronic pain condition not well understood or litigated by many attorneys.

Jeff has won justice for clients in complex medical malpractice cases who had been told by prior counsel that no liability existed. One case involved a $2,000,000 recovery for the wrongful death of a 62-year-old husband and father due to an undiagnosed cardiac tamponade that occurred at a south suburban Chicago hospital and nearly $1,000,000 for a woman who had her right ulnar nerve injured during the course of a cardiac ablation procedure at a suburban hospital. Notably, that woman had been a member of the jury in one of Jeff's medical malpractice trials and approached him after the trial was over to see if he would represent her.

Jeff has been active in both the legal and medical communities. Accompanied by one of his physically disabled clients, Jeff met with Illinois legislators in Springfield to oppose measures to place limits on recoveries available for victims of medical malpractice. He has served on the ITLA Amicus Committee and on the Institutional Review Board at Lurie Children's Hospital (formerly known as Children's Memorial). He has also given presentations on various topics related to tort law changes. In his local community, Jeff has served two terms on the Arlington Heights Plan Commission and was Chairman of the Ordinance Review Subcommittee. Jeff has also served on the Board of Directors of a nonprofit organization whose mission was to assist impoverished families and has been a volunteer for the Chicago Volunteer Legal Services helping families in foreclosure to keep their homes.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
