Consulted Attorney 2026I cannot recommend Steven Horak highly enough. After an incredibly stressful layoff involving protected concerted activities and a former employer that went out of its way—out of pure spite—to interfere with my online professional portfolio during my job search, I was exhausted. For four months, I reached out to law firm after law firm. They would show initial interest and then completely ghost me without explanation, leaving me in limbo. Steve was the last lawyer I reached out to, and I deeply wish he had been my first. Better yet, I wish I had spoken to him before I ever signed my severance agreement, as I would have been in a much better position. Unlike every other attorney, Steve actually picked up the phone on the first ring—which is unheard of these days. He was incredibly friendly, empathetic, and refreshingly frank. He listened to my entire story and finally gave me the answers no one else could be bothered to provide. He validated that I absolutely had a case, but explained the harsh reality: once a severance agreement is signed, it is exceptionally difficult to undo, and most firms walk away when they realize the litigation costs will outweigh the final payout. While it wasn't exactly the news I wanted to hear, it was exactly what I suspected and needed to hear. He also told me not to be intimidated by my former employer and strongly encouraged me to file a charge with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). The sheer weight that was lifted off my shoulders just by having an attorney treat me like a human being, give me actionable next steps, and tell it to me straight was immense. If you want an attorney who has true integrity, who will give you honest answers instead of the runaround, and who actually answers his phone, call Steve first.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
