Overview
With over 16 years of business litigation experience, Dan Tarpey co-founded Tarpey Wix LLC with two goals in mind: (i) getting the result the client wants and nothing less; and (ii) achieving that result without breaking the bank in doing so. It is Dan's philosophy that a client should never feel like giving up before reaching the finish line because of discouraging legal fees. Coupling the talent that comes with being trained by, working under and ultimately becoming partners with, some of the most brilliant and skilled litigators in the country, with the personal attention and flexibility on fee arrangements in order to accomplish a client's goal is THE focus of our practice.
As a third generation Chicago trial lawyer, Dan grew up watching his grandfather, father and two older brothers try cases in Chicago court rooms. While such an upbringing may have led to quite a few "spirited" discussions around the Tarpey family dinner table, it made Dan the lawyer he is today. With a fierce competitive spirit coupled with a never-forgotten lesson drilled by his father that being a trial lawyer means you don't give up until there is justice, is what drives Dan's practice today. His close relationships with clients, many of which have become his close friends, are a testament to his brutally loyal commitment. Dan prides himself not only on being his clients' lawyer, but views being a trusted friend and advisor equally as important. Running his own practice now allows him to dedicate the time and energy to accomplishing those goals.
After graduating from the University of Notre Dame Law School, Dan embarked on a commercial litigation career, working for some of the biggest and most reputable firms in the country, ascending through the ranks and making partner at the earliest possible time he became eligible. Dan ultimately left partnership at his former firm in order to take control of his practice, give his clients the personal attention he feels they deserve and not feel the pressures of having to bill the client for every task or discussion.
Dan's practice involves all types of business-related litigation, with particular emphasis on contract , partnership/LLC and commercial real estate-related disputes. A significant part of Dan's practice also includes unfair competition, non-compete, executive compensation disputes, corporate espionage and other employment-related matters. While a litigator by background, Dan devotes substantial time counseling his clients how best to stay out of litigation. With 16 years of litigating contract-related matters under his belt, Dan has the litigator's perspective of seeing what can ultimately go wrong in a contractual relationship and use that experience to his clients' benefit on the front end. Dan's clients feel that a litigator's insight at the inception of contract brings significant value by diffusing colossal headaches before they happen.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
