Attorney Information

Overview

James Karamanis is the founder of Barney & Karamanis, LLP, which concentrates its practice in helping victims of medical malpractice, other personal injuries, trade secret violations, contract disputes and other complex business disputes. James prides himself in his responsiveness to clients needs and inquiries, recognizing the importance for clients to be informed at every stage of their case. One of James’ most notable cases in the breach of contract area was a confidential settlement agreement that was reached where the defendant’s damage estimate ranged from approximately $150 million to $450 million, and the case was settled for an amount approximately equal to the accrual that the defendant had established for the case.

In addition to several multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements achieved in the areas of medical negligence, business disputes and other personal injury cases, James also obtained a verdict in what is believed to be the only Plaintiff’s verdict in the State of Illinois for a wrongful birth case, in the amount of $530,000. The suit was brought against an obstetrician/gynecologist and local clinic for failing to inform a 35-year-old pregnant mother of the risks of having an abnormal child over the age of 35, and failing to offer her amniocentesis testing. The clinic’s physician also mistakenly assessed gestational age at 23 weeks when the age of the fetus was, in actuality, 16 weeks.

For the past two consecutive years, 2018 and 2019, James has been selected by his peers and named by Chicago Magazine as one of the Top Attorneys in Chicago. Additionally, he has been rated as a Super Lawyer, which recognizes outstanding lawyers who have attained a high-degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. Super Lawyers is an independent rating service basing its selection process on peer nominations and peer evaluations.

Most recently, James serves as lead counsel on behalf of the Chicago JRW Little League players who were unceremoniously stripped of their title by Little League Baseball in the case of Butler et al. vs. Little League et al., Cook County Ct. No. 2018-L-000178. His press conference can be seen on YouTube at the following link: https://www.chicagotribune.com/visuals/85911208-132.html. James prides himself in representing the underdog against major corporations in the classic spirit of David versus Goliath.

James was born in Beloit, Wisconsin and made his way to the East Coast before coming to Illinois to practice law. His motivation stems from the people he helps. In James’s mind, nothing beats a David and Goliath story. He speaks fluent Greek, which makes him a valuable asset in today’s diverse communities.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
