Highly recommend James. I learned my lesson the hard way when going through a complex divorce that a cheap attorney will cost you more money in the long-run. This time around I searched for a good attorney that didn't toy around with my case by dragging it out even more than I had to. I consulted with a few before finding James. While other attorneys recommended strategy of filing motions after motions that would further litigate my case, James provided a more solution-based approach. Instead of finding ways to drag out my case, he approached my case in a logical, strategical manner that really focused on resolving my case in the best way possible. He is assertive and realistic, he is ethical and really also works for the best interest of the children. With other attorneys I got the sense that they wanted to find a way to drag things out to rack up the legal bills, while with James I really felt like he cared about my case and finding a way to resolve it. He is really ethical and empathetic and won't steer you wrong.

J Laraia was a superb lawyer who fought for my rights during a contemptuous divorce.

As everyone knows, a divorce is difficult. Choosing the wrong attorney compounds the problem. I dealt with James Laraia and his team for over a year before getting a fair and just settlement over a number of difficult issues. James is very professional and cares about his client. He is experienced, knowledgeable, professional and is respected by both the Judge and the opposing Attorney. Charges are completely explained, documented and fair. I was completely satisfied with my choice of Laraia and Whitty. Larry McKay

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
