Overview
G. Richard Slater is the managing partner of Slater Law Office LLC in Carmel, Indiana. Founded in 1991 by his father, George G. Slater, and joined in 2001 by his mother, Nancy Slater, after she transitioned from her career as a physician, the firm has grown into a multigenerational practice grounded in trust, guidance, and long‑term relationships.
Rich carries that tradition forward with the philosophy that elder law is not limited by age and is an ongoing relationship with clients, not a one-time transaction. He works closely with individuals and families to craft and update comprehensive life plans, including wills, trusts, special needs trusts, powers of attorney, guardianships, probate and trust administration, Medicaid planning strategies, and planning for individuals with mental or physical disabilities.
Rooted in Hamilton County, Rich grew up on his family’s farm before attending Culver Military Academy for high school. He began his undergraduate studies at Rose‑Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana, then redirected his path from engineering to business, earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Business Administration from Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. He subsequently moved to the Cayman Islands to manage a home improvement company and served as a volunteer officer with the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. Returning to the United States in 2009, he joined Slater Law Office LLC as a law clerk by day while completing evening studies, earning his J.D. in 2015 from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis.
An active volunteer in the legal community, Rich frequently speaks on estate planning and elder law topics and provides pro bono services to veterans through his work with the Indianapolis Bar Association. His professional memberships include the Estate Planning & Administration Section of the Indianapolis Bar Association; the Probate, Trust & Real Property Section and Elder Law Section of the Indiana State Bar Association; the American Bar Association; and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA).
Outside the office, Rich is a licensed private pilot, amateur (ham) radio operator, and beekeeper. He enjoys playing tennis, camping, assisting his neighbors with yard and home maintenance, and spending time with his fiancé, Valerie, and their dogs—Cora, a German Shepherd, and Asher, a Husky. He looks forward to serving the community for decades to come, carrying forward the legacy and client‑focused values on which his family’s practice has been built.
