Attorney Information
Overview
Son of Richard Smith, founder of the law firm, Gordon Smith has practiced law continuously with the Firm since his matriculation from Indiana Law School with a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1959, and his graduation from Wabash College in 1955. He joined the firm just a few months after his life long friend and partner, John T. Hume III.
In his early years, Gordon's practice involved trials both in the plaintiff and defense area, and he participated in the litigation involving the Coliseum explosion disaster and he achieved the largest settlements in the Indianapolis 500 scaffold disaster.
A need to expand the firm's practice into the business and probate practice caused Gordon to focus in probate and business law, borrowing from the experience he received in the Office of the Probate Clerk prior to entering the law practice.
He has had experience and been an advisor to clients having issues in business succession planning, divestitures, joint ventures, partnerships, and corporations. He concentrates in the areas of probate, trusts, estates, tax planning, corporations, charitable organizations, and litigation involving probate and business. He was nominated by his peers as a Super-Lawyer, an honor awarded to only 5% of attorneys in Indiana. He also achieved an AV designation, the highest rating attainable, from his peers in Martindale-Hubbell, a widely known and nationally recognized publication which polls the performance of attorneys throughout the United States.
Gordon is admitted to practice in all courts in the State of Indiana. He is also admitted to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in Chicago.
Gordon was a founder and president of the IAC Arts Foundation, Inc. and the IAC Sports Foundation, Inc., the latter which sponsors the St. Patrick's Day Parade, the largest annual parade in Indianapolis next to the 500 Festival Parade. He has been a board member and officer of the Indianapolis Athletic Club. Also, he has been a state officer in the Optimist Club. His memberships have also included the Indianapolis Lawyers Club, the 702 Club, the American Business Club, Meridian Hills Country Club and the Indianapolis Athletic Club.
A former scoutmaster, Gordon is proud to have a son and grandson attain the rank of Eagle Scout. Among the lawyers of Hume Smith there are four eagle scouts.
Outside of serving his clients needs, Gordon keeps busy with his ten grandchildren, playing tennis, and traveling when time allows.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
