Overview
An Experienced, Respected Attorney
A 1995 graduate of Indiana University School of Law, as well as a 1992 graduate of DePauw University, I am a proven Indiana lawyer having tried over 100 jury trials and 200 bench trials.
After founding Joel Hand Law, I received numerous awards, including the 2007 M.A.D.D. National Prosecutor of the Year Award. My experience and knowledge of impaired driving and traffic offenses places me among the very top in my profession.
Ready To Assist You in DUI And Criminal Law Cases
Protecting and preserving your legal rights is job number one. My experience allows me to fully appreciate and understand the legal system and how to best protect your interests. Because of my extensive experience as a prosecutor, I thoroughly understand the criminal justice system, which allows me to better evaluate your case and determine the facts and law that can help you.
My law firm is focused on helping others and I look forward to helping you receive the personal attention and representation that you need and deserve.
An Innovator in The Field
I created the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team (FACT) concept in 2001 while working as a deputy prosecutor in Indianapolis as a unique solution to a complex problem of how to better investigate and prosecute impaired driving death cases.
I also served as the first traffic safety resource prosecutor for the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council, a highly specialized post responsible for spearheading training for prosecutors and law enforcement officers in impaired driving and traffic safety issues.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
