Indianapolis Business Litigation Lawyer

Overview

Marek brings a wealth of experience and perspective to his practice, thanks to his background, education, and work for the federal and state government as well as in the private sector. Although he loves solving legal puzzles, Marek understands that for his clients, legal problems fundamentally are expensive and confusing obstacles that can bring normal life to a halt. Marek strives to remove these obstacles in the most efficient way possible, drawing on his extensive experience in both litigation and transactional work. Marek has worked on all sides of taxation disputes, as an administrative law judge for the Indiana Board of Tax Review, as a staff attorney for state tax authority, and as a representative of individual and business clients. He has successfully litigated taxation matters involving oil and gas companies, governmental contractors and Indian tribes, and has negotiated inter-govermental agreements pertaining to confidential taxpayer data. In addition to tax work, Marek has worked as an in-house counsel for a logistics company, where he drafted the company's family and medical leave policies and renegotiated commercial leases. In federal government, Marek has served as an ethics and clearance counsel to the President of the United States, where he was granted top secret security clearance by the government. His work involved evaluating candidates for Senate-confirmed and other government positions, as well as ensuring that existing government officials complied with federal ethics requirements. Having returned to private practice, Marek now focuses on business transactions, taxation and litigation.

Born and raised in Poland, Marek is fluent Polish and has served as a translator in court. After immigrating to the United States, Marek's family settled in the Pacific Northwest. Marek eventually left for Minnesota, where he studied history at Carleton College, taught English as a second language (ESL), and received distinction for his thesis on the post-war experiences of World War II Polish resistance fighters. After a brief but eventful stint working as an independent contractor for a cable TV mapping business, Marek went on to earn his juris doctorate at the Yale Law School, where he worked for the school's small business clinic, assisting local clients with initial business formation and business reorganization. After graduating law school, Marek went on to work and live throughout the United States as his wife completed her medical education, residency and oncology fellowship. Marek and his family are now happily settled in Carmel, Indiana.

Marek has been admitted to the bar in Indiana, New York, New Mexico and Illinois.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
