Attorney Information

Overview

Richard Kammen is a retired criminal defense attorney who was widely regarded as one of Indiana's leading criminal defense lawyers and a nationally recognized expert in defending homicide and capital cases. During his distinguished legal career, he also represented clients in numerous white-collar and other complex criminal matters.

Mr. Kammen graduated cum laude from Ripon College in 1968 and earned his Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law in 1971. Admitted to the bar in 1971, he began his legal career following his service in the United States Army.

Throughout his career, Mr. Kammen served as a public defender in the Marion County Courts on two occasions, from 1972 to 1974 and again from 1978 to 1979.

Although now retired from the active practice of law, Mr. Kammen continues to consult with members of the firm and with attorneys throughout the United States. He is also an author. His first novel, Tortured Justice: Guantanamo Bay, was published in the spring of 2023, and his second novel, Tortured Justice: South Carolina, was published in 2024.

During his active practice, Mr. Kammen was routinely appointed by the United States District Courts to represent defendants in capital cases throughout the United States, including:

  • United States v. Raymond Cheely, where the government's request for the death penalty was dismissed as improper.
  • United States v. Reginald Brown, where the government's request for the death penalty and the underlying murder charges were dismissed after the defendant was found to be innocent.
  • United States v. Joe Minerd, in which the defendant, convicted of killing his pregnant girlfriend and her three-year-old child with a bomb, received a life sentence.

For many years, Mr. Kammen also served as lead counsel in the defense of Rahim al-Nashiri, who faced the death penalty at Guantanamo Bay for his alleged role in the bombing of the USS Cole in Aden, Yemen.

Throughout his legal career, Mr. Kammen was a frequent speaker and lecturer on criminal defense issues, presenting in nearly every federal circuit and in states across the country. He continues to give educational presentations about Guantanamo Bay in connection with his book, Tortured Justice: Guantanamo Bay.
