Overview
Douglas graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 1991 after earning his B.A. in History from the same university in 1988. He began his legal career as a contract Public Defender in Hamilton County, Ohio, and later worked as an associate at Beirne & Wirthlin.
In 1994, Douglas returned closer to home and opened his private practice in Dearborn County, Indiana, where he also served as a Public Defender in the Dearborn County Superior Court until 2001. Since then, he has focused his practice on Social Security Disability and Criminal Defense, while also representing local non-profit organizations, small businesses, and the Dearborn County Solid Waste Management District.
Douglas’s dedication to the legal profession extends beyond his practice. He served on the Indiana Public Defender Council Board of Directors from 1996 to 2008, including two years as Chairman, and taught trial skills at the Indiana Public Defender Trial Practice Institute for five years. He is also a member of the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives.
Equally committed to his community, Doug serves on the Board of Directors of Heart House, Inc. and LifeTime Resources, and has been recognized with awards for his volunteer legal services and advocacy for older clients.
When he’s not working, Doug enjoys cooking, boating, and reading, and most of all, spending time with his wife and daughter. With decades of legal experience and a passion for helping others, Doug looks forward to guiding his clients through life’s challenges with knowledge, dedication, and care.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
