Hired Attorney 2023Dawn was professional and charged a reasonable rate for our simple quit claim deed transaction. I would recommend her to my family and friends.

Hired Attorney 2020I would not suggest to use Dawn. I was in need of a simple real estate sale contract and the normal counseling that goes with that process. Dawn Takekawa was very difficult and frustrating to work with. She is extremely not responsive to answering questions and completing tasks. During a matter that was moving quickly I would lose contact with her for up to 2 days at a time. I called and left an email and it could be 1 or 2 days later that she would get back to me. When she did communicate back she did not provide all the responses requested. When she would eventually feel like calling me back she didn't leave voice messages so I did not know it was her. I was direct with her and let her know I'm frustrated by the long delays in communication and no timeline for when she was going to complete the long awaited document. She suggested that I move on to another lawyer. That was the best advice she could give because another firm completed the entire contract in half a day. I gave them no indication I was in a hurry at all. They just completed the job and communicated with me within normal expectations.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
