Overview
Background
I grew up in the tri-state area, born in Hazel Green, Wisconsin, and moved to Dubuque at nine years old. I graduated from Hempstead High School before attending the University of Iowa, where I graduated from the College of Law in 2007. Immediately after law school, I returned to Dubuque to be close to family and friends—and I’ve been here ever since.
I began my legal career at Fuerste, Carew, Juergens & Sudmeier, P.C., where I practiced for nearly two decades. In January 2026, I fulfilled a long-held dream and opened my own firm, Jenny L. Weiss, PLLC. Starting my own practice has been both exciting and deeply rewarding, and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve my clients in this new chapter.
My Approach
I understand that when clients come to me, they are often navigating unfamiliar territory during some of the most stressful times in their lives. My role is to guide you through that uncertainty with honesty, patience, and a steady hand. Every client is different, and I take the time to understand not just your case, but your individual needs and how you communicate best.
I believe in being straightforward with you—giving you the information you need to hear, even when it’s not what you hoped for. That candor, I’ve found, builds trust and leads to better outcomes. At the same time, I am committed to finding practical solutions and working toward resolution whenever possible. While I am confident in the courtroom and prepared to advocate vigorously on your behalf when litigation is necessary, I also value negotiation and know that the best result is often one that avoids prolonged conflict.
I genuinely enjoy the practice of law—from the give-and-take of negotiation to the precision of drafting appellate briefs. I have had the privilege of arguing before both the Iowa Supreme Court and the Iowa Court of Appeals, experiences I consider highlights of my career. What I love most about this work is that it is an art: there is always a way to craft a thoughtful argument or find a creative path forward. I thrive on that challenge and am always learning something new in this ever-evolving field.
Personal
In February 2026, my husband and I will celebrate fourteen years of marriage. I enjoy dinner nights with him and trying new restaurants—when I can convince him to be a little adventurous. Outside of work, you’ll find me reading, traveling, gardening in my backyard, or sharing strong drinks with good friends. My greatest joy in life is my nieces and nephews, whom I love to spoil rotten before happily handing them back to their parents.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
