Overview
Todd grew up on the Southside of Des Moines, attending Lincoln High School. He attended the University of Northern Iowa, graduating with a double major of Marketing and Spanish. He then attended Drake University Law School, earning a Juris Doctorate. He has been practicing criminal law since 1997. He has successfully defended cases through jury trial in many counties throughout the State of Iowa, including cases of murder, kidnapping, sexual abuse, robbery, drugs and OWI. He has been able to get murder charges dropped on two occasions prior to trial through a vigorous investigation of the facts and knowledge of the law. Through this experience he has developed a network of consultants, investigators and forensic experts to assist in the representation of his clients. Todd believes that an experienced team approach to a case, involving not only all the attorneys at Lombardi and Miler, but involving input from those experts where appropriate, provides the best defense.
He is passionate about defending the Constitution and the rights provided to all persons. In our system, a criminal defense attorney is the person responsible for maintaining liberty through a fair process. A criminal defense attorney needs to zealously defend each and every case, otherwise the government can run unchecked over the rights of our people.
In the civil arena, he has also successfully litigated and tried to juries cases involving medical malpractice, personal injury and wrongful death.
Todd is an avid hunter and outdoor enthusiast. He has also completed marathons in more than 20 states, and ultramarathons of 50 miles in several states, including Colorado, Wyoming and Minnesota.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
