Attorney Information
Overview
J. Tanner Duncan is a home-grown Cincinnatian who fights tirelessly for his clients. Practicing in the area of criminal defense in both Ohio and Kentucky, Tanner has handled anything from high-level felonies threatening life sentences down to misdemeanors and traffic citations. Whether a client is the subject of an investigation, facing a pending criminal charge, or taking their case to trial, Tanner has the knowledge and experience to obtain the best results in the most challenging cases.
Tanner has experience defending murder cases, shooting cases, sex crimes, DUI/OVIs, domestic violence, and many more. While other attorneys shy away from trial, that is where Tanner thrives. He takes his cases personally, also outlining the long-standing repercussions that a criminal conviction can pose such as registration requirements, lifetime convictions with no possibility of expungement, license suspensions, and firearm restrictions. Being licensed in both Ohio and Kentucky also makes him particularly qualified to handle issues that may have consequences spanning both jurisdictions such as license suspensions and probation or parole supervision.
Communication and honesty are the hallmarks of Tanner's representation. He looks to fight alongside his clients rather than asking them to take blind advice. Throughout representation, it is his goal that his clients know what to expect before they walk into a courthouse, especially for those who are unfamiliar with the criminal legal process.
Tanner has also been defense counsel for several high-profile cases that have found their way into the news. Regardless of what court the case is in or which judge is presiding, you will be in good hands as Tanner believes that all cases are won in the preparation and time leading up to court. Tanner also regularly handles post-conviction matters such as early termination of probation, expungement or sealing of criminal records, restoration of firearms rights, and challenging incorrect background checks through the FBI, among others.
Tanner graduated from Little Miami High School before attending the University of Cincinnati where he graduated early after only two years. He then earned his juris doctorate from Northern Kentucky University's Salmon P. Chase College of Law where he was a member of law review, trial team, the Order of the Barristers, and graduated among the top in his class, cum laude. He also had the chance while still in law school to argue before the Federal 6th Circuit Court of Appeals through his constitutional litigation clinic as well as travel overseas to Bangkok, Thailand for a summer legal internship with International Justice Mission (IJM) fighting against human trafficking.
Now a native of Covington, Tanner enjoys spending his time with family and friends, attending Reds, Bengals, and FC Cincy games, kayaking and boating, and hiking National Parks. Tanner is active in his Christian faith and regularly attends Crossroads Church and their annual Man Camp. Overall, Tanner believes that no one should be judged solely on their worst mistake, and he is proud to have made career surrounding that belief.
