Hired Attorney 2021-2022Schuyler has got to be the WORST family court attorney. I hired his firm in 2021 and he rushed my divorce of 12 years, my custody and encouraged me to decline alimony and rushed my case. He never listened to anything I wanted. I lost everything in my divorce. 4 years later, I’m still dragging myself and my children out of the hole he left us in financially. DON’’T make the same mistake I made with him. I trusted him and he took my money and gave nothing.

Hired Attorney 2021-2022UPDATE. I personally spoke with Hugh Barrow about my experience and concerns and tried to reach an agreement. The agreement was only beneficial to him and his firm. Hanging me out to dry again. I turned it down. Here is my experience with Barrow Brown. Please choose wisely and research your attorney. My life has been turned upside down from their lack of legal responsibilities to represent me. I hired Barrow Brown’s firm in January 2021 for my divorce and child custody. My attorney was Schuyler Kinneman. Mr. Kinneman informed me in February 2021, that he would be leaving the firm but to not tell anyone as he hasn’t told the firm. After this was said, Mr. Kinneman gave legal advice that I should settle on all my legal matters whether I wanted to or not. He would explain that going to court would be lengthy and very expensive. He said that about any and every request by me. Even to agree to not accept alimony from a 12 year marriage even though the judge already agreed to alimony and we were waiting for the court to determine the amount. He refused to assist me in fighting for 50/50 custody of my children and stating again that it would be expensive and lengthy. Also used scare tactics to have me accept an offer of $24k less than the equity of my home of 14 years. A DVO was in place involving supervised visits with my children. I was found guilty of “threats of violence” by Judge Goodwin in family court but no evidence of harm or threat to children yet I was placed on supervised visits. Mr. Kinneman accepted the opposition’s requests to drop the DVO in May 2021, but did nothing to take my children and myself out of supervised visits. I often asked for a “Friend of the court” to assist with my children and Mr. Kinneman would once again tell me how very expensive it would be and that it would be even longer until I saw my children unsupervised. After mediation in May 2021, we signed the paperwork. Mr. Kinneman did not know that the opposition did not sign the agreement and 3 days later, they demanded more. Mr. Kinneman did not support my decision to take this to the judge. Again, stating that it could be months before I could see my children, cost of court and attorney fees. I spent nearly $13K with Barrow Brown in attorney fees. I spent over $3K to be supervised from January 2021 to June 2021. I also paid child support $3K in child support. I spent $19K in 6 months. Plus, I still had him on retainer through January 2022, because he told me that was could renegotiate my custody agreement then. He left the firm in January 2022. I found out after he left that my order had to be in place for 1 year before it could be changed. He did not give good or even mediocre legal advice. He had no intention or interest in spending the rest of his time with Barrow Brown in court. I would never recommend this firm or any attorney working for them to anyone !! Since I hired Barrow Brown, I’ve had to hire other attorneys to clean up this mess! Costing more money. Yes, the money Mr. Kinneman said that I didn’t have. Again, please choose wisely! How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
