Attorney Information
Overview
Charlie knew he wanted to be a trial lawyer since he was in elementary school. After working his way through college, he had aspirations of being a prosecutor, but he discovered then that civil practice suited him better. In law school he worked for a revered Plaintiff’s attorney and saw how litigation is a much more tactical endeavor than other practices to which he was exposed. After law school, he returned to his college town to work in a small insurance defense firm representing the insureds of Allstate and State Farm and experienced his insurance defense “baptism by fire.” He returned to Louisville in 2012, joined Sewell & Neal, and started a family. In his career, Charlie has been given more trial opportunities than most of his contemporaries as he has successfully tried over a dozen cases in Courts throughout Kentucky. In that time, his practice has grown to include defending trucking companies, construction professionals, regional insurers, and small businesses. He holds an AV Rating with Martindale-Hubbell and has been named as SuperLawyer in personal injury defense for the past 5 years.
When Charlie is not helping his clients, he enjoys spending time with his wife and five children. He writes periodically about the intersection of parenting and trying civil cases and how being a husband and father teaches him life lessons that help him connect with juries.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
