Attorney Information
Overview
Mike began his legal career as a JAG Officer after he was commissioned in the United States Navy in 1990. He served in that role for four year and earned the rank of Lieutenant while enjoying the rich history and beautiful scenery around Pearl Harbor. While in the Navy, Mike was appointed the Special Assistant to the United States Attorney for Honolulu, Hawaii. Mike was able to earn invaluable trial and other litigation experience as he defended the United States from federal tort actions.
Mike had only been in private practice for one year when he joined Pete Sewell in starting this firm in 1995. He now focuses his practice on worker’s compensation defense. He now applies the vigilance expected by the Armed Forces to defending businesses faced with sometimes massive claims for injuries that can have a meaningful impact on the business’s livelihood.
Mike is an avid lover of the outdoors as evidenced by his majoring in Geology and serving on the University of Kentucky’s Journal of Law and Mineral Policy during law school. Mike enjoys hiking, swimming, skiing, and just about any other outdoor activity the Louisville area can offer when he isn’t helping his clients. Mike has also competed in multiple marathons as well as an Ironman Triathlon.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
