Overview

Amber is a graduate of Cheverus High School (2004, summa cum laude). She completed a double major in Government and French Studies at Colby College (2008, magna cum laude), and earned her J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law in 2011. While at Maine Law, Amber represented the Moot Court team at a national constitutional law competition, served as a professorial research assistant, and was a member of the International Law Society. She spent a semester studying the French legal system at the Université du Maine in Le Mans, France, and is proficient in conversational French.

Amber specializes in divorce, family law and other civil litigation. In addition to navigating clients successfully through the family court system (from initial appearances and mediations to final hearings), she has represented clients in a variety of civil and criminal matters, including personal injury, traffic offenses, and domestic violence offenses. Amber is also responsible for the firm's protection from abuse and protection from harassment practice (representing both plaintiffs and defendants).

Prior to joining Cloutier, Conley & Duffett, P.A. as an associate attorney in 2012, Amber clerked with this firm for two years. Previously, she received an Equal Justice Works grant for a family law internship at Pine Tree Legal Assistance, conducted mediations with Youth Alternatives Ingraham (now Opportunity Alliance), and worked as a student attorney at the Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic.

Amber has served as a Family Law Helpline volunteer for the Volunteer Lawyers Project since 2009. She has been a regular member of the Katahdin Counsel Program, comprised of attorneys honored annually by the Maine Supreme Judicial Court for their pro bono service.

Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
