Attorney Information
Overview
Emily "E.J." Hammann is a Partner and Trial Attorney at Brown & Barron, where she represents families in Maryland and the District of Columbia in medical malpractice and nursing home cases.
Since 2004, E.J. has handled more than 150 cases filed in Maryland and D.C., along with numerous others resolved before suit was filed. Her practice has been focused almost exclusively on medical negligence, spanning a wide range of alleged failures, including cardiac and anesthesia complications, birth injuries, missed strokes, emergency room care, delayed cancer diagnosis, and plastic surgery negligence. She has also litigated numerous surgical complication cases in orthopedics, nephrology, gynecology, and gastroenterology.
E.J. is as comfortable at the negotiating table as she is in the courtroom. Having negotiated well over a hundred cases, she brings deep experience in mediation. But in addition to her negotiation experience, E.J. also has extensive courtroom experience. In her second year at the firm, she was trial counsel in a nursing home negligence and a medical malpractice case that each resulted in $8 million-plus plaintiffs' verdicts ($8.5 million and $8.3 million), and she most recently secured a $35 million plaintiff's verdict in a medical malpractice case. In both 2024 and 2025, she obtained a jury verdict that landed in the nation’s Top 100 Jury Verdicts list.
When a family has lost a loved one, or a client has been seriously injured, E.J. works to hold healthcare providers accountable for failing to meet the required standard of care. These cases are deeply personal. Her goal is to help clients understand what happened, and to pursue justice and fair compensation. Exposing problems in healthcare can also prompt changes in training, policies, and care practices that make patients safer and improve care for others.
Before joining Brown & Barron in 2022, E.J. defended doctors and hospitals and worked with medical malpractice insurance carriers. That experience gives her an insider's understanding of how the other side evaluates and defends these cases, and she uses that insight to benefit injured clients.
E.J. represents clients in Baltimore City, Prince George's County, Anne Arundel County, Baltimore County, Harford County, as well as throughout the rest of Maryland - and she also routinely represents clients in the District of Columbia. She became admitted to the Maryland Bar in 2004, and the Bar of Washington, D.C. in 2006. E.J. has presented multiple times to other lawyers concerning evaluating, litigating, and trying medical malpractice cases.
