I am truly fortunate to have been represented by Mr. James Hock as my defense attorney in a case in which I was unjustly accused of Federal Felony theft charges by a former employer and co-workers. His truly professional, incisive and in depth investigation of my case and my accusers led to my being found not guilty of all charges and leaving the courthouse a free man. In a full day trial, SEVEN individuals testified against me including the President and Vice-President of the organization I was an employee of. In his cross examinations, Mr. Hock systematically and masterfully led each witness into testimony that shed doubt not only on my guilt, but also on the character of the witnesses. This was all done in the disarming (to the witnesses) manner of a complete gentleman. I witnessed Mr. Hocks deep grasp of the trial process and human nature as he led each witness exactly where they needed to go to reveal to the judge that my charges were motivated by personal animosity against me and had no criminal basis. At the conclusion of testimony the judge did not even need to hear a word of defense from me. Known as a very tough (but fair) judge she found me not guilty on all charges. Her decision could only have been based on Mr. Hock completely revealing to her the nature of my accusers. She saw that this case was a vendetta. A travesty of justice. Three days later this same judge had similar charges against my wife from the same employer completely dropped without a trial. I consider Mr. James Hock responsible for my freedom then and my clean record today.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
