Attorney Information
Overview
Since graduating Boston University Law School in 1992, Lorenzo Perez has become a highly experienced trial lawyer who focuses his practice on complex criminal trial advocacy, civil matters, and appellate advocacy.
For over thirty years, throughout Massachusetts and at Federal Court, Attorney Perez has obtained outstandingly favorable results for his clients, including numerous Not Guilty verdicts at Massachusetts Superior Courts, District Courts, and a string of extraordinary "Not Guilty on All Counts" Jury Verdicts at Federal District Court. Such favorable results at Federal Court are exceptional because the conviction rate at Federal Court is extremely high (between 85% and 95%). Attorney Perez's track record, which includes over thirty years of such favorable results, has been possible through focused, personalized attention.
Regularly trying murder cases since 2008, Attorney Perez prides himself on working equally as attentively in all cases, regardless of whether a case involves straight-forward issues of law or entails complex litigation, such as murder cases and traumatic brain injury civil cases. With a background in Business Management, and as a 1988 graduate of Bentley University, he has skillfully represented clients in white collar crimes and business crimes, avoiding prosecution for his clients and diplomatically obtaining favorable outcomes by maintaining attention to detail.
Guided by the principle that all cases in the judicial system impact clients' livelihood, rights, and liberty interests; Attorney Perez maintains that all clients deserve tenacious advocacy -- in straight-forward matters as well as complex cases. He has represented clients who are well-respected members of the community (former Representatives, Harvard professors, MIT PhD candidates, police officers, West Point Graduates, Veterans, etc.); which is to say, people from all walks of life who, due to an unfortunate twist of fate or a lapse in judgment, find themselves in need of skilled trial counsel or an adept legal representative to dismiss charges, or avoid grand jury indictment.
As a service to the public, Attorney Perez represents qualified clients Pro Bono (without charging a fee for his services), and at reduced rates in order to regularly represent people who cannot otherwise afford his services. This is especially the case for those who are wrongly accused; i.e., Innocence Project / Innocence Program cases. Attorney Perez is an active supporter of the Innocence Project, having served as the Assistant Director of the New England Innocence Project, and the Director of the Cambridge Innocence Project.
Favorable outcomes:
Favorable results include:
lifetime financial and medical support settlements in civil cases: civil judgments regularly ranging from $200,000 to over a million dollars (with life-long traumatic brain injury settlements surpassing multiple millions of dollars in verdicts);
Not Guilty jury verdicts in a multitude of courts at all levels of the court system;
"Motions Allowed" decisions in motions to suppress evidence, and motions to dismiss charges; and,
the avoidance of Grand Jury indictments for business owners and for falsely accused criminal defendants.
Additionally, on several occasions, intensive investigation and proper presentation of the facts investigated have led to the dismissal of criminal charges against wrongly accused clients.
Caseload Management to Optimize Effectiveness:
Attorney Perez maintains a manageable caseload in order to optimally represent his clients; thus, he is selective about taking on new clients. As a potential client, it is important to keep in mind that regardless of Attorney Perez's -- or any other lawyer's -- achievements, favorable results in past cases, or high rating on attorney rating websites, the key criteria to determining whether an attorney is right for you include: trust, competence, communication, and effectiveness demonstrated in cases similar to your case. Such qualities should guide your decision regarding retaining counsel, as it is upon this foundation which a truly effective attorney-client relationship and successful outcomes are built.
Contributing to the Improvement of Law Practice:
Dedicating himself to the improvement of trial law practice throughout Massachusetts, Attorney Perez regularly teaches legal skills seminars to attorneys on the Murder Panel through the Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education for the Committee for Public Counsel Services, and Middlesex Defense Attorneys. Courses have included Murder Panel Trial Skills Seminars, and a wide array of other topics. He also has contributed to the integrity of the legal community by volunteering as a Hearing Officer at the Board of Bar Overseers.
